How Much Will it Cost to Remodel my Bathroom?

One of the most common home renovations is a bathroom remodel.

And most homeowners contemplating remodeling their bathroom want to know how much their project will cost them and how much they should spend.

Consumer Reports recommends not spending more than 5 to 10% of your home’s value on your remodel. (You can use Trulia.com to estimate this value.)

And the Cost vs. Value report by Remodeling Magazine lists the cost of a mid-range bathroom remodel in the Tampa Bay, Florida area around $16,522. Of course, the exact price will vary depending on many factors. Here are three of the biggest factors to consider.

The size of your bathroom

The $16,522 cost listed above is the average for a mid-range 5 foot by 7 foot bathroom remodel, according to Remodeling Magazine.

It’s somewhat obvious, but the bigger your bathroom, the more money it will likely cost you. Bigger bathrooms cost more to remodel because they often require:

  • More flooring – If you’re re-tiling your floor, more square footage is more money.
  • Bigger counters and vanities – Bigger bathrooms likely have double vanities, which will cost more to replace and the countertops will be bigger.
  • More and larger amenities – While most mid-range bathrooms have a tub/shower combo, larger bathrooms might have a separate tub and shower or a spa tub.

The number of fixtures you are moving/upgrading

Another large factor in the cost of your bathroom remodel is the number of fixtures you are planning on moving or upgrading. This includes your:

  • Toilet
  • Bathtub
  • Shower
  • Sinks

Obviously, the more of these you upgrade or replace, the higher your cost will be. But more important is how many of them you’ll be moving.

Who is doing the work

The last major factor that affects the cost of your bathroom remodeling project is deciding who is going to do the project. Should you do it yourself or hire someone?

There are pros and cons to both options. If you decide to do it yourself, you may have to buy a lot of tools that you don’t have to complete the project. Plus, it will likely take you much more time and you may not know how to do many of the tasks involved.

But you may save some money and have a sense of accomplishment when finished.

Hiring a reputable contractor costs more, but ensures that the work is done competently and in a more timely manner. And most quality contractors will warranty their work in case something goes wrong.
